Jobless in Seattle

Okay so I don’t live in Seattle. But maybe that city would offer me more than my own.

I’m traveling abroad this summer, God-willing. I got a scholarship to study Arabic in Cairo again for two months. It’s from the middle of June to August (8 weeks); they’re paying for ticket and everything! I’m going early though, in May, so I’ll have to pay for myself for those 4 weeks.

There’s only one teensy little problem. I’m going broke. Literally. I work 4 hours a week teaching Sunday School which pays about $12/hour, which is pretty great. But that’s just not going to cut it.

So here’s my budget:
Tuition for Arabic: $776
Apartment: $250
Food: $150
Transportation: $50
Personal Shopping: $250
Grand Total: $1,476

I talked to my dad and he said he’s willing to pay a portion of the costs. But my dad’s an engineer and with the way automobile industry is going these days, I don’t think that portion is going to be very large.

What's the logical thing to do then?

Start job hunting.

ASAP.

When they say “hunt” they really mean it. I felt like I kept shooting at deer that just kept running away. Stupid deer.* I called about 20 places and they all said the same freaking thing.

“I’m sorry we don’t have anything available currently. Buh-bye.”

Why thank you for so easily slamming the door on my face. One lady with a very strong Indian accent actually paused and said, "uh, nooo" in a way that made me feel so stupid for even asking.

I really hate looking for jobs. It takes too much energy out of me. Plus I feel like a failure when I go through hours of looking only to end up in the same place I began in.

Help me!!!

(*Disclaimer: I do not approve of going around shooting deer for game)

dude. start working at the call center. they are always, forever and ever and ever and ever going to be hiring.

you cant go wrong there. promise.

but in all seriousness, keep looking. i said the same thing, and alhamdullilah i got a job

a wise person once told me to also keep making dua and not to forget the immense power of it ;)

I don't think you should call. Calling is uselessssssss. Walk in, talk to the manager and apply. Give the application to the manager and ask when they're going to hire. Try the mall. Looking professional/ sounding desperate really works.

Try looking for jobs in places that will offer more hours with less pay. Try tutoring at the local Islamic school, daycare/babysitting for some aunties or neighbors, If you look near a community college they usually have lots of on campus jobs.

P.S. You're not the only one studying in Cairo this summer nanana nan boo boo

Paris and Girl on a Journey- I'll probably have loads of stories when I'm there...just like I did last summer when I went...maybe I should write about that =D

CA- I hate the call center and I don't even know where it is. Sigh. Maybe I'll go there as a last resort. Or maybe I'll take Mrs. Cullen's advice.

SM- Yea I should walk in with my resume. But the mall??

Perplxin- you're going to be in Cairo too???? OMG how cool! What center are you gonna study at?

Mrs. Cullens- maybe I should work at a radio station instead. Wouldn't that be sweet? And yes, Seattle is pretty awesome. Minus the indecisive jerks.

MarjnHomer- I tried that but it didn't work to well. Maybe I'll try again with a better search?

CC- Didn't you work at the call center once and then quit? I think everyone does that?

the economy is bad so its going to be tougher than usual (and usual was already tough)
but one thing is still the same... there are women doctors, lawyers (MAYBEEEE engineers) that have full time careers and are always looking for baby-sitters... if you like kids, that would be a good job because they usually pay well...as long as you don't work for a desi lol
good luck!!
and keep the cc as a last last resort

I hope you find something.... I know it's hard when you're job hunting. It takes a lot out of you, and it seems like you do a lot of work and get no-where. But then something clicks and suddenly you're already working. It's as if there was no time before it. I hope you find a job soon. Or another way to fund your trip
xx
and LOL to Mrs Cullen about the guy on the bachelor and your Seattle comment.

I hate job searching. I just suck at it.
You could always work in retail! They're pretty much always hiring.

...don't take my advice. you'll hate me.

Look around and find some things of yours that you can sell on Ebay... I only suggest this because it is probably more promissing than finding a job right now. :'(
