It's November. School has been in session for 51 days (always seems like much more then it really is). And I havent given you all one update from this school year. My apologies for that.
My new class annoys me. Or did in the beginning of the year. I'm getting used to them though, and missing my former students less and less. They've moved on. Forgotten my name. And have given all their love over to their second grade teacher. Whatevs to them. I dont care.
This year's class was proving to be dull and I didnt have much to share, hence the lack of sharing.
Until this week.
Sure I had some stories. Like this one time when I was blending the word "ditch" with my students and asked them to write it down. And was walking around and noticed that majority of them write their "d" as a "b". I kept wondering why the heck my students were writing b****.
And then the time when I asked a student to use the word "tail and tale" in a sentence and he said "My momma said she gon whoop my tail/tale".
But those are eh.
Anywho,I have a student in my class, who I knew from last year (he was retained). He is a very sweet young man, but when he gets upset, theres chaos. He was put on red for punching his sister (shes also in my class) because she wouldnt let him be first in line (Being first in line is sooooooooooooo important to them). He was upset cause he was on red, so he started throwing a tantrum. And I asked him to leave my room, wash his face, look at how silly he looks, stop crying, drink some water, and come back into the classroom when he's ready.
He was willing to do all of that. But from last year's experience, I knew not to send him anywhere on his own because there was a possiblity he would run away, out the door, and down the street. So I sent one of my reliable student's with him.
And when they came back, the reliable student said "He wants to kill you. He told me so in the bathroom."
"What did he say?"
"Uhh...I want to kill her."
He ended up getting suspended for making a comment like this. For one day. And that was that.
I got home and I told my husband.
He told me to quit.
I told some of my friends.
They were worried and concerned.
I told my mom.
She freaked out. Was worried and concerned. And told me to quit.
And then I told C.C.
And she laughed.
And I laughed right with her, cause it was meant to be a funny story to tell.*
Right? Hahaha?
The end.
*Disclaimer: I understand that sometimes we should be cautious of these things and take them very seriously, what with some kids really coming to school with guns and knives ready to kill somebody. But I know this kid. And as soon as he said it, he regretted it and showed remorse, and apologized. And he received a consequence for it. And everything was okay. Alhamdulilah I am alive.
Never doubt that a small group of people can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has- M.M.

The story of The End of an Era..... and the Beginning of a New One
A long, long time ago, in approximately 1984, my parents migrated from Bangladesh to the United States of America. Just as any parents(or humans, rather) that migrated prior, during, and after that time period, emigrated to the United States of America: for a better life.
So upon entering the land of the free, my parents moved into a house that was owned by my maternal grandfather and grandmother. They resided their with the latter, my two uncles, and my mom's sister and husband and kids, and then us. There were many a people living in that house. It was literally bursting at its seams. Four bedrooms, and each bedroom was occupied by each family. My family was in the master bedroom cause we had the largest family at the time. It was my mom, my dad, my older sister, older brother, and me.
Eventually as time went on, so too did our family members. Until it was at the point that the only people still living in that house was us. My immediate family. And by then, we had grown to an additional family member. And then another. And another. No one in the extended family wanted to stay in that area, they wanted to get out of the "ghettos", which is kinda ironic cause they left one ghetto to live in another.
Aside from that though, we were the only ones left. And my dad had already enrolled us in a school that he really liked so he bought the property from my grandfather and we stayed.
For 27 years.
This past April, we finally moved out of that house, and into a new house away from the depreciated urban city .
For the past five months, since we purchased, signed, sealed, dotted the I's and crossed the T's, I hadn't given much thought to the upcoming change that was looming. After all, there was much work to be done to the new house. Much, much work. It almost seemed like we would never move in. Or by the time we did move in, I would be married off and in a house of my own.
It's funny how one's words could become so true.
So here I am, writing this post while sitting in the new house, and not really wanting to write it.
And also while sitting in the new house, talking to my brother about my new apartment.
I'm moving out of the current new house and moving on to my new life.
With a new person.
The person that I hope and pray that I'll be spending the rest of my life with. InshaAllah, God willing.
And so here I am.
Here we are.
And this is the end.
But also, the beginning. InshaAllah.
P.S. I am very dramatic, I know.

Oh the Stupidity
How can I not be worried? I turned on the radio this morning, like
every morning, and tuned into the "Top 40" station. This one is my
least favorite and I only listen to that if the other station is on commercial
break. Most of their topics involve sex or something related and I
can't be bothered with listening to that early in the morning.
I mean, who talks about that in the morning? Who talks about that, at all?
So what I hear today is a married couple nervously phoning into the station
as part of this new segment. I'm thinking why are they so nervous, something bad
must have happened or maybe their marriage is in trouble and they want advice.
Wrong! They were extremely nervous because they had entered their homemade
"sex tape" (I thought only celebrities had those?) into the station. The show producers/DJ's
then take that DVD along with 2 other random DVD's (Disney movies) and shuffle everything up.
Then, the wife was called in to randomly select one of the DVD's. Whatever she picked, would be sentto a person of her choice. She picked the random DVD and then she picked her mother-in-law. MIL!!! (By now I'm already so disgusted by all this). Normally I would switch stations at
such a point (when I feel like they've crossed a line, which is most of the time with this station), but I wanted to know why on earth would anyone put themselves through something like this?
So now the DVD was being hand delivered to the mother in law (at 8 am in the morning, mind you). Obviously the couple was REALLY nervous because they were barely speaking
and they kept saying "omg I'm nervous." And I'm thinking didn't you put yourself in this
position in the first place... and um question of the year...WHY? In the end, the mother in law
played the dvd (not knowing why it was sent to her or what was in it) and lucky for them
it turned out it was Bambi. The wife lucked out because her random selection was not the sex tape. The mother in law was pretty confused and didn't understand what was going on or why her son and daughter in law sounded ecstatic that she was watching Bambi.
Finally the DJ announces the couple has won tickets to the Eminem and Jay Z concert.
THE EMINEM AND JAY Z CONCERT?!?!?!??!?!
I'm thinking ()(*%(*_(#_()_#%@^&*^&*^#_@)$(_)(!!!!!!)
That's what they did that for?
SOOOOOOOOO lame and idiotic and lame to the infinite power.
Is this how lame our country is becoming? Sex is prevalent everywhere, even on
an 8 am radio talk show, which by the way could be playing in a car full of kids going to school in a few weeks! It makes me so angry and frankly, worried.
How is this even allowed? If they absolutely have to have that topic maybe they
can make it a late night segment so no sane person has to hear it. And also for the participants, what kind of message exactly are you sending to people? Is everything so open now in society that you're willing to display your most intimate moments for anyone to see? That too, for some concert??!?!
Why can't people save up and buy tickets like the old days? How disrespectful to the mother in law (and disgusting) to receive that "gift"?? How lame is that husband who doesn't mind sending
in a tape for strange men and women (basically everyone at the radio station) to see? Which by the way,the men were commenting on while airing their show live, about how interesting and "raunchy" it was.
To me that couple is idiotic. Also, Eminem and Jay Z are not exactly national heros (in my opinion), why so much attention?
This radio show has done similar segments before and usually its their morning slot, I know because I've flipped stations tons of times while driving to work. I just can't stand when they talk like that and there's no benefit in listening to it, for anyone! More than that, I just don't want to participate in giving their station any ratings because they obviously don't deserve it.
Is this a problem in other cities as well? Are your radio stations crossing the line?
Is anybody else as worried as I am about our future and how hard it will be to raise kids here?

Why do people like going to the zoo again?

Apparently the elephants at the Detroit zoo were sold. I did not know this. And kept wondering where the heck the elephants were. Isn't weird? How can you have a zoo without elephants?
I highly doubt people go to the zoo for the animals anymore though.
I went to get away from the school. My kids went to eat their lunch. When we first got there, one would assume that they would list off the animals they wanted to see first. Nope. All the kids wanted to eat. Other kids went to buy souvernirs. Some went to see a 3-D movie. No one was too excited about the animals. While walking around the zoo, they were excited to see water fountains that sprayed misty water and sprinklers that they could run through. There was a playground inside of the zoo, all the kids kept asking if they could go there.
We had 77 students. 15 adults. And one zoo.
There were five kids per adult.I purposefully put other students with other adults so I could keep them away from me. I intentionally put two students with me, because I wanted to keep a close eye on them.
There was a kid, in my group, who kept complaing about everything. All five of my kids complained. I understand that. Heck, I complained. It was a long day and we were tired and hot and hungry. But this kid, he takes the cake. Every. single. comment from him was a complaint. "Why do we have to go here?" "Why is it so hot?" "When are we going to eat?" "Can we eat now?" "Can we eat now?" "How about now?" And just like most of the kids from our school, it didnt seem like he came to the zoo to see animals.
I put him in my group specifically because he frequently misbehaves. Before the field trip, there were stipulations that each child had to meet. I was rooting for this kid. All of the administration team was rooting for this kid. There were days when I wanted to take the field trip away from him. But I truly did want him to go because he has never been on a field trip before. He has had so many behavior issues last year in Kindergarten and apparently he is not as bad this year as he was last. It made me sad that some of my kids have never gone on a field trip, so I tried really hard for him to go. And he did! He went to the zoo. Complained. But was still able to go. I'll take it.
There was another girl in my group who really frustrated me. She's one of my sweet and quiet students. During our time at the zoo, though, she kept focusing and fixating herself on the randomest stuff. She saw my black and white printed shoes, towards the middle of the day, and commented on them over and over and over. And then she became fixated on this strawberry red frog that she really wanted to see. I didnt know where exactly to find it, I'm assuming it was in the amphibian area but we had already gone there and I didnt want to go back. And then she commented on my purse for about five minutes. Then tried to catch every single pollen she saw and tell me about it. And lastly, out of all the animals, bugs, insects, amphibians, reptiles, and mammals there was at the zoo, she was not interested in any of them. Instead she found a teeny tiny green bug, the size of a period (.) and continuously commented on it.
One other thing, all the animals were hiding. I dont know if it was because of the excruciatingly hot temperatures or if they just couldn't be bothered with entertaining humans, but a lot of them were MIA. At one point, my group and I were searching for the gorillas in the gorilla area. One girl stood on the fence to get a better look. She began shouting, "I see them! I see them! I see the gorillas!!!.................Oh wait....umm.....those are....just....people. Never mind." Lol.
Anyways, I told the kids in my group that if they went the whole day without complaining, I would buy them cotton candy.
Because I ended up complaining too, I decided to buy them cotton candy because they were good sports throughout the day.
And just like everything else that day, they were more excited about the cotton candy then the zoo.

Picture Perfect
Remember that one post I wrote? Picture (im)Perfect.
Yea, well I found someone who takes them quite perfectly, unlike myself. He has a really sweet blog where he features Muslims across nation doing really cool and different things. They're all Muslims who are proud of their Islam and who show their Islam by pursuing what they love! It's a great way to show the perfect balance of one's lifestyle and spirituality.
I know him personally and rumor has it that he's about to post up some baller status features soon! Check it out!

1 Detroit officer dead, 4 others wounded
One officer was killed, four were wounded in Detroit early this morning, following a phone call from a worried neighbor who said she heard gunshots near her home.
Officer Brian Huff, 44, was shot and killed while on duty. Two of the four wounded officers have been released.
Suspect Jason Gibson, 25, has been charged several times, including for attempting to disarm an officer in 2007.
Everett, who uses alias names, was arrested last November for carrying a concealed weapon and released on a $200,000 bond.
Police Chief Warren Evans says the suspect, who has not been charged, should already have been behind bars.
Commander Steve Dolunt, Deputy Commander of the Eastern District, told Fox 2 News the shooting was unexpected.
"From what I understand this is the first time in history the police department has had five police officers shot at the same time."
Dolunt said Huff was apart of the back-up unit. The veteran officer was "just making sure the rookies were okay," he said.

Oil Spills, 10-day fishing ban in Gulf of Mexico
BP has taken responsibility for the massive oil spill which led to a 10-day fishing ban on states bordering the Gulf of Mexico, from Louisianna to Florida.
The federal government is putting heat on the company to clean up the mess. There are nearly 210,000 gallons of crude oil pumping into the gulf, per day.
BP said they will try closing up the well causing the oil spurge, in 6-8 days.
Environmentalists are testing the water supplies to determine any health hazards.
